St. Barnabas Deacons In Action
And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. (1 Thessalonians 5:14)
Our deacons, The Rev. Frank Tyrrell, The Rev. Bev Thompson and The Rev. Cathy Stone, lead by example. Within the parish, they form part of a worship team that shares the duties associated with the Eucharist, reading of the Gospel and preaching.
They are also active in providing services in the wider community. All three bring hope to people desperately in need in a very tangible way and we honour their commitment.

Loving the marginalized
Deacon Frank Tyrrell provides support for groups of people who are often forgotten by society. In the interest of privacy, we cannot publish details, but the people with whom he works on a daily basis have come to know and appreciate his efforts
Tending for the sick
Deacon Bev Thompson works extensively with patients at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. With her gentle and cheerful approach, she is a source of comfort to people who are ill or in pain.
Women in need
Deacon Cathy Stone is active in providing services at Cameron House in the city and a former Executive Director of the Rural Outreach Committee which provides support for women in need in rural communities surrounding the city.
Here is Cathy's story.
Rev. Cathy Stone is very active in ministering to women in the Peterborough and surrounding area in her role as Deacon and has done for several years as the former Executive Director of the Rural Outreach Committee (ROC).
Rev. Cathy also works closely with Cameron House, a shelter for women in Peterborough, where she meets with women to discuss their lives in a Christian perspective. Studying "The Twelve Steps for Christians" helps to bring Jesus into the lives of these women in a safe and caring environment, letting them know that God truly cares for them no matter what they are experiencing.
The ROC is an emergency shelter for people in need regardless of race, religion, social, economic situation, political views, sexual orientation or preference. The ROC provides a 24 hour confidential "Safe Zone" for victim(s) of violence and their families in the Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield and Galway-Cavendish-Harvey and surrounding area*. The ROC will also provide temporary shelter for individuals who suddenly find themselves homeless because of fire, flooding or other emergency due to natural disaster.
